Constitutional Amendment [12 Feb 2004|02:15pm]
Message from your friendly neighborhood Human Rights Campaign (thanks [info]ldygabilan):

According to The Washington Post, the President, as a way to "jumpstart his campaign," is about to endorse a Constitutional amendment, sponsored by Representative Marylin Musgrave (R-CO) that would ban marriage rights for same-sex couples and could forever invalidate civil unions or other legal protections for same-sex couples and their children. He is bending to pressure from anti-gay extremists who oppose every effort to secure equality for GLBT Americans. He -- and all of our leaders -- need to hear from all of us who support GLBT civil rights and marriage equality, and who oppose amending our nation's most sacred document - the U.S. Constitution. We must be as relentless as the anti-gay forces.

So, starting today, we need your help in deluging Congress and the White House with calls, faxes, and e-mails. Here's how:

Fax your members of Congress. Tell them to oppose the Musgrave anti-marriage amendment and any attempt to amend the Constitution to discriminate against GLBT Americans. Click here or copy and paste this URL into your browser:

Call the White House at 202-456-1111. Tell the President that using GLBT Americans and the U.S. Constitution for political gain is shameful. Click here to let us know you called.

Please pass this on to everyone you know -- friends, family, colleagues. We trying to get 50,000 calls to the President during the next 48 hours. Click here to forward to all your friends.

Thank you for your efforts today, and for your patience as we keep you informed and involved via e-mail over the next few days. We're glad we can count on you to continue this fight of our lives.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Jacques

The Santa Disclosure [07 Dec 2003|09:07am]

Last week my youngest angrily demanded in a slightly hurting voice, "once and for all", to know whether Santa Claus is real or not.

I sighed a big, heavy, long-suffering sigh because we have been having this discussion every year since he was big enough to care. It's the same discussion I've had with his brother. My younger acts like I'm lying to him. I never have.

Every year I explain that Saint Nicholas once upon a time was a real person who did acts of kindness and charity for children at Christmastime, and that in honor of his generous spirit, people in the US and Europe keep the tradition of acting like Saint Nick and giving gifts mysteriously in the middle of the night. I explain that this tradition has gone on for centuries and grown to its current state. I explain that this Santa thing is at once a legend and a game. I explain that the idea of Santa Claus bringing you presents may be vaguely true in the most general sense, in that if it weren't for Saint Nick, we wouldn't have this tradition, but that in practical concrete terms it is -not- a round guy in a funny suit doing all the gift-schlepping.

And still I get the third degree. So I explained it all over again. He's hurt and upset because this debate is still raging among his friends, and the paternal side of his family is siding firmly with literal belief in the myth. This irritates me, but he is my child, and I won't lie to him, not even to make the in-laws happy.

I just wish, "once and for all", he'd believe me, and then just take an attitude of letting the in-laws and the fellow third-graders just have their fun. Wink and nod, my dear. Wink and nod.

Le Sigh [30 Nov 2003|11:39pm]
LiveJournal is being recalcitrant today, so I've got more time for exploring the friends of my friends at DrivelBox and InsaneJournal.

So far I haven't found anybody who seems familiar, besides the site administrators, but I remember that happening with LJ. I remember wondering what was the point, being a lone voice in a sea of strangers. I'd been aware of LJ for at least a year and had a moldering, little-used account for a good long while, before I found that many of my meatspace friends had LJs, and that through them I would meet people who would become friends.

Maybe that'll happen again. Perhaps.

Super! It's Like A Nexus ... Thing [29 Nov 2003|09:12am]
I am in the throes of inter-journal giddiness.

Those of you who have a DrivelBox account, or an InsaneJournal account, or a LiveJournal account, and I do not have you in my friends list yet, please let me know your userID and what site you have an account at, so I can correct my friends lists.

Those of who have RSS feeds, please give those up as well. If you want me to keep em private or semi-private, I can do that. Some of you I'll be emailing because I either had difficulty making a feed of your site, or you have a feed that was broken.

I will also at some point want an interface that does what CrossPost does, only from my input for mimosa wisdom, so I can update everywhere all at once. Meanwhile, though, I can still use that journal for "stuff" and these for "fluff".

Oh! That reminds me. If you are using an LJ-code based journalling site, you can now add my "real" journal to your friends. The RSS feed is at http://myrss.com/f/s/p/springdewMasterlistGbzxh12.rss. Be forewarned - the first link is a dud - it goes to the journal's main page. On LJ, this feed is already established under the userID 'springdewdotcom' so you can just friend it.

It Bears Repeating... [19 Apr 2002|05:52pm]

I wrote this up on my main journal, but this, I think, certainly bears repeating, so it's going to go on all of them.

I hate it when people call technical support from a cheap-ass cordless phone. Do you have any idea how much static such devices pipe directly into both ears of the person attempting to help? Voices fade in and fade out, and horrible things happen to the tech rep who is listening extra intently to hear the voice of the customer. Because just when you think you can make out what they are saying...

INT. FEATURELESS CUBICLE.

REP is facing a computer, with headphones on,
taking a call.

		CUSTOMER
	KKKKSSSSSHHHHHHHKKKKKKKK -i. BZZTTTT-i
	ZZZTTTTT-main name SSSSHHHHHHHHH-s
	FFFFFFFFF-frol KZK-dotcom.

		REP
I'm sorry, we have terrible static on the
line today. Could you repeat that?

		CUSTOMER
	BZZZT -said FFFFFSSSSSSHHHHHHHHT! -asol
	BZP-com.

		REP
	Was that parasol dot com?

		CUSTOMER
	No! KKKKSSSSSSSHHHH -samatter ZZZZTTT
	-you??!! SSSSSSSHHHHTTTT -ell it FFFFFT
	-or you. ZZZZZZTTT -ee SSSSSHHHHHHTTTT
	-ay FFFFFFFFFF -ee SSSSSHHHHHHHKKKT
	-ess...

Sudden BBZZAAPP!!!!! sound from headphones. REP
stifles a scream, leaps out of the chair and rips
headphones off. REP holds the microphone near
mouth.

		REP
	(hurriedly)
Excuse me, sir, let me put you on hold while
	I run a diagnostic.

REP stabs a button on the phone, flings headphones at
desk, and does a dance of pain while clasping ears and
whimpering.

You see, there are many, many kinds of static, but the two I deal with most are:

1. The shushy sort of static that keeps me from hearing the customer.

2. The sudden extremely loud ZAP! usually associated with a lightning strike near an AM radio.

One necessitates more intent listening. The other calls for turning down the volume. These stupid cheaply made cordless phones subject me to both kinds at the same time! Lovely. Just perfect for causing injury. I hate them.

For the love of God, if you are going to call technical support, especially if you are going to be near a computer or other electronic equipment, which kicks off massive amounts of electromagnetic energy (guess what interferes with cordless phones?), please, please, please, I beg you, shell out sufficient funds for a well-shielded cordless. They go for about $150 or so. Or use a corded phone. Even if you have to borrow one from your neighbor. Corded phones will not kill you. The cordless ones might just as well kill me. Or make me want to kill you.

And remember, your tech rep has your address and phone number.

Wow [13 Apr 2002|01:54am]
This is way great. Of course I am familiar with the interface already, having worked with the software before, but I'm still quite inordinately pleased with the results, and also glad to be hanging out on Insanity and Squeaky's machine. Way too cool!
